KZN Newsmaker of the Year

Durban University of Technology and Celebrate Durban is hosting a gala dinner for the KZN news-maker of the year. The Journalism advisory board initiated the event last year during which Hassim Amla was voted 2011 Newsmaker of the year.

Four nominees have been shortlisted by panel of journalists and editors to be eligible for the Newsmaker of the Year Award this year. The four nominees are: the City of Durban for Cop 17; Vera Hecht who negotiated with Somalia hostage takers for the release of her brother Bruno Pelizzari and his partner Deborah Calitz; the Save the Rhino KZN campaign and AmaZulu Football Club

Local History Museums Bridge City Zulu Culture Exhibition: Beadwork in Zulu Culture

20-24 Sept

Bridge City, KwaMashu

The exhibition looks at the history of beads from the Middle East and Europe via Arab traders into South east Africa. All traditional Zulu beadwork, excluding items used by ritual specialists, relates in some way to courtship and marriage. It also assists in regulating behaviour between individuals of opposite gender.

This exclusively feminine craft has an intuitive fluency found only in inspired forms of poetry and visual art.

City Celebration of Dance

We Are Durban are hosting a showcase of some of the different styles which Durban has to offer – from Indian to gumboot, to ballet to krump to pantsula and traditional African and contemporary and hip-hop and Latin American. Durban International Blues Festival

Wilsons Wharf and Catalina Theatre

The festival, now in its 8th successful year will play host to a number of well-known bands and musicians including TheReals,Swart Piet, East Coast BluesBand, the Tim Wells Blues Band, Shiela de Blue Note,and the fabulously popular Albert Frost from Cape Town with fellow Capetonian’s Natasha Meister and the Boulevard Blues. This year sees the return of the popular Baret Blues, and new additions include the young band Customized and The DHS Band (Durban Boys High School), Raoul and Black Friday and many more and the cherry on top is the ever fabulous blues master from the USA –Jimmy D Lane but watch the press and the website for added programme information. The KwaMashu Africa Festival 2012 on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 October showcases music, film, art and fashion at Freedom Valley in the heart of Kwa Mashu.

Friday’s activities at the Ekhaya Multi Arts Centre include films on Hip Hop culture and the inside story of Graceland as well as a full programme of interactive music workshops beginning at noon. The highlight on Saturday evening is the World Premiere launch of Ray Phiri’s “The Man, The Music, The Friendships” a concert, with The Graceland Band featuring Themba Mkhize, Bakithi Khumalo and Isaac Mtshali, and stellar special guests Oliver Mtukudzi (Zimbabwe) N’Faly Kouyate (Guinea), The Drummers of Burundi (Burundi) and Sacred Drummers (Reunion).

Festivities begin at noon with a Fashion Show by The House of Lindarco and move on to performances by a multi-cultural supporting cast including Selaelo Selota, John Ellis, Lendel Moonsamy and Holly followed by a late night DJ and hip hop contingent including DJ Black Coffee, Zakwe, DJ Siyanda, DJ Happy Girl, DJ Tunner and DJ le Soul.
