The Barn Swallows: Every year towards the end of October – mid April, these migratory birds start to appear at Lake Victoria in Mount Moreland, just inland from Umdloti. Initially small flocks arrive which soon swell to thousands and then millions. By November there can be anything from 3 – 5 million barn swallows roosting in the indigenous ‘Phragamities’ reeds. Every evening, half an hour before sunset, the Barnyard Swallows come home to roost. Bring along a picnic or sundowners, chairs, mozzies repellent, blankets and enjoy this phenomenal sight.
